Parashat Toldot

פרשת תולדת

ספר בראשית

Rivqah's prayers are heard and she finally conceives after 20 years. Her pregnancy is tumultuous and God explains to her that two nations are in her womb. Esav, the firstborn, is a hunter and Yitzchaq's favorite; Y‘aqov, Rivqah's favorite, is a man who stays in tents in search of knowledge. In a plot created by his mother, Esav sells his birthright to Yaakov, who receives all of his father's blessings. Y‘aqov flees to Charan to find a wife for himself in his mother's family, while Esav marries a girl from the house of Yishm‘ael.
